Mathemalchemy
A large-scale collaborative mathematical art installation conceived by Ingrid Daubechies and Dominique Ehrmann, combining contributions from over two dozen mathematicians and artists. The installation — a richly detailed miniature world celebrating mathematics — premiered at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. in 2022 and toured the US and internationally through 2025. Featured in the New York Times (March 2025).
Mathemalchemy was initiated by mathematician Ingrid Daubechies and textile artist Dominique Ehrmann, who brought together more than two dozen mathematicians and artists to build a large-scale installation representing a mathematical landscape in miniature — waterfalls, towers, gardens, libraries, and mechanical devices, each embodying a piece of mathematics.
Edmund’s contributions centred on the moving machines within the installation: animated mechanical elements that brought motion to the otherwise static structure, reflecting the dynamic side of mathematical processes.
After its premiere at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. in 2022, the installation toured extensively across the US and internationally through 2025. It was the subject of a New York Times feature by Siobhan Roberts in March 2025.
